Wasps stung at death by Racing Metro

January 22, 2010 Leave a comment

An injury-time penalty by Jonathan Wisniewski gave Racing Metro a 19-17 victory over London Wasps in their final European Challenge Cup pool game in Paris.

Tom Varndell scored two tries for the visitors, with former England fly-half Danny Cipriani converting both and adding a penalty as the visitors had their noses in front for much of the game.

But an infraction just outside the 22m line with the clock already in the red gave Wisniewski the chance to land a match winning kick, and he slotted it comfortably between the posts.

Wasps still top their group, but the shock defeat for the previously untouchable London side means that they will have to hope other results go their way at the weekend if they are to secure home advantage in the quarter-finals.
